SURVEY OF INDIA
DEPARTMENT OF SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY
GOVERNMENT OF INDIA
GREAT ARC CONTESTS- 2002
1. INTRODUCTION:
Any point on the surface of the earth is referenced by its unique co-ordinate, in terms of Latitude, Longitude and Height above a datum. Calculation of such co-ordinates requires a mathematical surface, which is the best fit to the surface of the earth. A dense network of such precisely established control points, known as Geodetic Triangulation Stations are available all over India, which are used as reference points for any precise work connected with National network and act as National framework for subsequent surveys.
Survey of India, the National Mapping Agency of Government of India, established in 1767, has done pioneering work in this activity of establishing national framework and preparation of maps depicting information on the surface of the earth. The Geodetic & Research Branch of Survey of India, deals with precise horizontal, vertical, gravity observations and sea surface measurements.
Establishment of Geodetic Triangulation Stations has been done by dedicated officers and staff of Survey of India, by making observations and measurements on ground, over a time period. This operation of making observations is known as Great Trigonometric Survey (GTS). Accurate Measurement of the Arc of a Meridian by laying the base line at St. Thomas Mount, commenced on 10th April 1802 under the leadership of Col Lambton. Befittingly, 10th April of every year is remembered as the NATIONAL SURVEY DAY, signifying the commencement of precise geodetic work by this illustrious Branch of Survey of India.
To Commemorate Bicentenary Celebrations of this day, many activities are programmed. The Department of Science & Technology, to which Survey of India belongs, has patronized this programme, with the intention of creating awareness among the public as a whole, the need for accuracy in data collection Geodetic, Topographic, Cadastral, Demographic etc., truthful depiction of the collected data, in a user friendly manner pictorial, numerical, descriptive or graphic.
2. INVOLVING CHILDREN IN THE PROGRAMME:
Children are the best messengers. They can grasp better, assimilate faster, think and respond positive. They are the focus of science popularization activities. Learning becomes easier through solving of problems in individual mode or group mode. Participation in activities involving use of multiple faculties (observations, hands-on experiments, logical analysis etc.) enhances their self confidence. Participation in competitions helps their personality development. Psychologically, they get a feeling of proving themselves or satisfaction of doing something useful for the society and this leads to strengthening of their esteem. In addition they are able to appreciate role of science in development process.
Hence the programme envisages addressing large number of children in all corners of the country and involve them in this awareness programme with the following objectives:-
- Encourage activity based learning.
- Create awareness among children the need of truthful collection of data for map making.
- Create awareness about applications of maps in daily life.
- Knowledge about upcoming technologies for truthful depiction of collected data in a user friendly manner- art and science of map making.
The Competition is planned in THREE categories and named as follows to remember Col William Lambton, the great personality who took up the gigantic task of measuring the Great Arc:-
